Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy

A French man confesses his love in the form of song to a piece of toast in a restaurant. Did I mention the love struck gentleman has different sized croissants attached to his face? This is just one scene in quirky Noel Fielding’s new psychedelic animation series Noels Fielding’s Luxury Comedy. Clearly it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, despite if you’re a Mighty Boosh fan or not.

Their is obvious similarities in Noel's animations to Boosh Characters such as Charlie The Bubblegum and The Story of The Crack Fox. But the risk of creating a show based entirely on surreal emotions may not pay off in the sitcom. With the absence of Julian Barratt’s nerdy character Howard Moon, Noel Fielding’s series has lost the balance of the little bit of sanity that he brought to The Mighty Boosh. I know it’s unfair to compare the two sitcoms, as I’m sure it’s the last thing Noel Fielding want as he is trying to step away from his Vince Noir character.

The problem is for most people the sitcom is too elaborate and surreal. There doesn’t seem to be any set in stone story line as it jumps from character to character, becoming more random and making less sense as it goes on.

I’m not ignoring the excellence of the animation. Noel clearly is a gifted artist and claims surrealist Salvador Dali inspires him. His passion for surrealist art is clearly shown throughout the animation. The animation is definitely a luxury and the time, thought, and effort put into the series is undoubtedly high.

Recurring characters include half robotic Andy Warhol who is Noel’s housekeeper, Smooth the butler played by Noel Fielding’s Brother Michael who is known from Naboo in The Mighty Boosh who has a furry trunk and even a heartbroken, chocolate finger who also is a P.E teacher.
